  1. Technology is an effective tool for student learning because 21st century students are familiar with technology and relate well to hands-on, interactive learning. Teachers can utilize technology to meet individual student needs and actively engage students in the learning process. This requires that teachers learn the technology themselves and know how to integrate it into their curriculum as a means to an end. Technology should enhance learning, not be the sole source of the learning experience. Because my school does not have a media center, our students have to rely heavily on the Internet for their research. Teachers spend time stressing the importance of using the Internet responsibly and identifying web sites with factual information versus those with personal opinions. I use an online testing program and create my own test banks so most of my classes take online tests. By using technology for testing, the students are practicing taking online tests similar to the SOL tests, and they receive immediate feedback regarding their grade and explanations for wrong answers. Web-based lesssons that include interactive tools help teachers assess student learning as they are progressing through a unit of study. Since many students have access to computers at home, teachers can use online homework assignments to assess learning and provide immediate feedback. The use of blogs, wikis, and/or emails provides excellent resources for students to communicate with classmates and/or the teacher regarding topics that are being studied in class.

Using online tests and other assignments helps the teachers to assess the level of learning at a quicker pace. This allows the teacher to give the student feedback quicker and hopefully this will be a great benefit for the student.

Students today are definitely more technology oriented than we were when we were their age. That is why integrating technology in the classroom learning process is so wonderful. It makes learning fun and exciting for them because it is something that they enjoy using and can relate to . Intel teaching essentials class has showed me many ways to incorporate technology into my classroom activities no matter what the age or grade.

I feel like in order for me to meet my students on their playing field, I must use technology. Students need to be actively engaged or very little learning will take place. The use of technology allows for more assessment checkpoints as a unit is completed.

The internet has a wealth of 21st century tools students and teachers can use to enhance the learning process. I have picked up several assessment pieces today that I have not previously used.

I agree that technology is an effective tool for teachers and student learning. The problem is that many teachers dont know technology themselves. Therefore students want learn or assess web-based resources/ lessons.
My school don’t have enough computer labs. Most kids know e-mail, but probably not blogs and wikis. Teachers are so stressed out about lesson plans, they don’t bother to venture out.

  7. I think the best way to assess students is right after they have learned a new skill and technology has the potential for this to happen. EXCEPT students don’t have regular access to computers in our schools either in the classroom or a computer lab. Teachers are still spending too much time grading pencil paper tests which can’t assess student learning effectively or in a timely manner. There are plenty of online testing resources but where are the COMPUTERS!

  8. The problem I have, more than any other that will interfere with the assess using technology, is as Barb said, my students do not computers at home and they do not want them there.
I also find a major problem is that some students will have someone else do the assess so they can get credit. If the Web 2.0 tool can be found for a particular skill or concept, it can make it fun enough so the actual student wants to participate in the assess thus I can get an accurate measurement of his/her skills.

  9. I love the idea of assessing through technology. Our school recently purchased software that will help teachers do this easier. Since students are becoming my more hands on technology based I am sure test scores will improve as well. More technology is needed school wide to be able to do this consistently throughout the school.
